Hayden Pass is the northernmost gate in the beautiful
Sangre de Cristos and one of only two that cross this range, Medano Pass
being the other. The summit is wooded at 10,709' and doesn't offer any
great views to speak of, but it is in a corridor of the Sangre de Cristo
Wilderness which borders either side of the road for most of the way.
There are a couple of very small rocky sections and decent views to the
east and northeast towards Canon City and Pikes Peak. I have taken this
road only to the summit from the eastern approach at this point. It goes
between Villa Grove on the west and Coaldale to the east.
(The pictures from the western approach will be
added soon)
