Mt. Antero is another one of my favorite trails as the scenery is first-rate.
It doesn't go all the way to the 14,269-foot summit of Antero, but it
gets very close—about 430' short (13,838') of the summit on its
southern shoulder. If you were wanting an easy stroll to a 14er, this
is about as easy as it gets, and the fourth easiest behind Mt. Bross,
Pikes Peak and Mt. Evans.
The road is pretty smooth, save for a very short section on the upper
switchbacks, which would not present a problem for any stock 4WD vehicle.
There is really only one fairly tight switchback at the top. I did a two-point
turn on the way down, but managed a single pass on our way up. The pictures
below are from an early August trip in 2003, where I traveled with Alan
Pershing (aka HaveBlue on the various forums). We were treated with a
wonderful day with fine views all around. A lunch at the top was a great
way to soak it all in.
