My rating: 3/10 The Saints John Road (yes, that's the correct spelling, oddly enough) trail is definitely one of my favorites in the area as the scenery is quite breathtaking. It's seven miles in length and goes from Montezuma to the north and intersects with Deer Creek Road, Radical Hill, and Middle Fork of the Swan to the south. The first trip pictured below was the same day Alan (HaveBlue on the various forums) and I departed from the 3rd annual Colorado 4Runner Jamboree as we wanted to run these trails on the way home from Buena Vista since we couldn't get enough trail riding in. This trip started with Webster Pass, Radical Hill and the Santa Fe Peak trails, which I've covered as well. As we were heading up Webster, and even before we got there, the clouds had set in and we weren't real sure what the views were going to be like. Once we were on Webster Pass, I think we knew it was going to be pretty neat with the clouds. It only got better with each progressive trail, and it got downright magical at the end of the Saints John Road. It was probably . . . no, check that . . . it WAS my favorite day of trail riding ever. It was just something else that words cannot describe. Sure, clear blue skies are great, too, allowing you to see the incredible panoramas, but with the type of clouds we had on this day, they added so much more ambience and drama than a clear sky could ever produce. The pictures help tell a bit of the story, but they don't give you the goose bumps that we were feeling at the end of this run when the clouds were starting to break. As it turns out, the second trip pictured here had a real nice sky as well. |
