16x8"
4 9/16" backspacing
I chose to go with 8" wheels for two reasons:
For a bit wider tire footprint, and to fill out the area under the flares
to get rid of the sucked in look. Here's a picture showing how the tires sit in relation to the flare. I don't have
a picture with a 7" wheel for comparison. The main reson I went with
aftermarket wheels was to get a matching spare out back to eliminate the
ugly black OEM one facing traffic. I did, however,
have to add 1/4" spacers in the front to clear the brake calipers.
You might be able to get away without using spacers for this amount of
backspacing, but you would definitely need to grind the calipers down
a bit. I wasn't ready to do that, so I had custom spacers made at a machine
shop using a local friend's design which he has been using for a few years
without any issues on his '98 4Runner.
I also purchased rear Toyota lugs and installed
them in the front to allow more threads to be seated. I realize spacers
are usually looked down upon, but they've worked for the other gentleman
and they've worked for myself just fine to this point. There is a significant amount of additional rubbing
in the front wheel wells using the 8" wheel with 285s compared to
the 7" OEM wheels, but has been manageable. These wheels are also offered in 3 5/8" backspacing, but that would have induced even more additional rubbing, which
is why I elected to go with 4 9/16".
Somewhere along the way, I have come across a different manufacturer's wheel with the same hole pattern as these with the optimal backspacing. Knowing that, I would not suggest going with the Mickey Thompson Classic IIs.
